5 Tips for a Successful Natural Hair Wash Day

5 Tips for a Successful Natural Hair Wash Day

Let's get real - Wash Day is equivalent to a curse word to many curly girls! For so long, I shared in the frustration of the religiously tedious process of cleansing, moisturizing and taming my curly mane but, as with many things, years of trial and error have taught me a thing or two that make the job easier - and dare I say, FUN!

I'm lying. No fun to be had here, but easier? Yes!

Here are some tips and tricks I've learned along the way that make the road to curly girl magic a little less daunting!

1. Give yourself plenty of time!

I know I'm not the only one who's rushed through a wash day twist out only to be left with a poof and tear stains on my satin pillow case. In life, and in curly hair, you can't rush a good thing! Giving yourself plenty of time for your wash day process will ensure that your kinks and curls are getting all of the love and attention they need, and we know they need ALOT.

Ole attention seeking heifers...

Plus, a clean scalp and moisturized strands can contribute greatly to the overall health and growth of your tresses. And I'm not sure I've met a curly girl uninterested in some hang time. So, block out that calendar, sis!

2. Work in Sections

Now, I have to admit that I envy the natural hair youtubers who can separate their hair into two sections or better yet, NOT AT ALL, and still come out with fully detangled, gorgeous curls.

Not I, said the Adrienne Nichole.

Six sections (three on each side of my head) is what I need to get the job done! Working in sections insures that my hair is cleansed, moisturized and detangled thoroughly as it allows me full access to my scalp as well as each hair strand. It also prevents my hair from getting super tangled in the wash and styling process. Lastly, if you're like me and have areas of your hair that are more course than others, sectioning allows you to give them some extra TLC! I like to use these hair ties for sectioning as they cause little to no breakage for me.

3. Deep Condition

This one is huge for me. The better moisturized my curls, the easier they are to style and the better they look! I wash my hair in the shower but don't fancy having to get out to deep condition under a dryer and then getting back in to rinse and finish the job. If there's one thing ain't nobody got time for...IT'S THAT. So, I prefer to use deep conditioning hair masks that work quickly. Here's one of my faves!

4. Use a Satin Bonnet and/or Pillowcase

For the love of all things Tracee Ellis Ross, stop playing Russian Roulette with your mane!

Okay, that's dramatic...

But, imagine you've spent hours washing, conditioning and crafting the perfect style for your curls and then BOOM...you ruin them by not wearing a bonnet or sleeping on a satin pillow case.

Issa a no from me, dog!

My curly style of choice is a wash and go so pineappling at night is a must. When it comes to my curls, risks aren't my thing so I sleep with a satin pillowcase as well but either/or should work to preserve your curly style and your sanity!

5. Don't give up

From big chops, to heat damage to color disasters to hair goals, maintaining curly hair is a process that can seem overwhelming and never-ending, but keep trying products and techniques until you find exactly what works for you. Your curls will thank you for it!
